We want to separate the government and the church. What happens when the church (Christian Schools) thats away a persons rights? Should the government get involved? The Ontario Christian School in my opinion is taking away the rights of Shay Clark, she did nothing wrong and is being penalized because her mother is a lesbian.
.................................................. .................

Here's the story:

School Expels Girl for Having Gay Parents

A 14-year-old student was expelled from a Christian school because her parents are lesbians, the school's superintendent said in a letter.

Shay Clark was expelled from Ontario Christian School on Thursday.

"Your family does not meet the policies of admission," Superintendent Leonard Stob wrote to Tina Clark, the girl's biological mother.

Stob wrote that school policy requires that at least one parent may not engage in practices "immoral or inconsistent with a positive Christian life style, such as cohabitating without marriage or in a homosexual relationship," The Los Angeles Times reported in Friday's edition.

Stob could not be reached for comment by the newspaper. Shay and her parents said they won't fight the ruling.

School administrators learned of the parents' relationship this week after Shay was reprimanded for talking to the crowd during a football game, Tina Clark said.

Clark and her partner have been together 22 years and have two other daughters, ages 9 and 19.

The school can set whatever criteria it wants, but I don't agree with it. It's a shame to punish the child for not agreeing with the parent's lifestyle (for want of a better word). I don't know all that many gay people, but the several couples I do know, I like, I consider a few of them very good friends.

I have more of a problem with friends of mine who have cheated and/or are cheating on their spouse. I have told them not to tell me when they do, as I will more than likely not take their side as I really disapprove. If they want to play the field, get divorced and then do it.

I feel badly for the child because she is the one who gets hurt in this situation. I do not believe the school should change their policies or should the will of outside "authorities" be forced upon the school. This is a private school which is paid for by it's students. This is what differentiates public and private education. If you step out of line in a private school for discipline, grades, dress code, or in this case moral family problems, you are out. No questions asked, you are out. The problem with public schools is they can not kick out kids that don't come there to learn and excel.

I can tell you in my kid's school they check their lockers and cars with drug dogs, and do all kinds of other things that would cause a public out cry (and would be illegal) in public schools to make sure there is nothing but education going on. If you step out of line, you are out the door and others are in waiting to take your place.

I read this story and thought about how the parents of this girl put her in that awkward and unfair position. The couple was together for many years when they enrolled her in a school that had clearly-stated policies in place. So I blame the parents for the girl's embarrassment.

Another point is that no one is taking away this girl's right to an education. She is free to get an education at a public school just like anyone else.

My final point about this story is that there appears to be more to it than the AP story reported. I looked this story up on line yesterday to see if any other paper had additional details about the disciplinary action taken when the girl was "talking to the crowd during a football game." What in the world was that all about? Why didn't the reporter bother to ask? But alas, every newspaper account I could google had the exact same wording.

P S Toad, our public school district is going to go ahead and bring in the drug-sniffing canines this year. Some parents have objected to this, but I say bring 'em on.

IMO, As a private school they have the right to admit who they choose. That's not to say that it is the right thing to do. Not very Christian one might say, judge not.... he without sin...ect. Why exclude the child for the "sins" of the parents? Do they exclude the child of divorced couples, single parents, adulterers or other assorted "sinners"?

I'm with ya here. They even bring the dogs into every classroom so that no child goes unchecked (after they check lockers & cars). It has proved to be an embarrassing moment for many kids with well connected parents. The good part is that there are no exceptions to the rules and punishment is dealt out harshly. "Thank you sir may I have another!" Nono

What's funny is that as long as one parent is "moral", then the other parent can be what?.... a politician. LOL

I think that if one parent was "moral" the other could either be a liberal or a Democrat. :D

Honestly the private school I am familiar with is full of liberal teachers. My son's liberal ideas were quickly brought back to earth when he got his first paycheck with tax withheld. Funny how that changes the way one thinks very quickly.

I like that. I agree with that kind of procedures. May I know the name of the school? Maybe I can't afford it now, but for middle school could be an option.

Were you honest and tell him that most of his taxes are going to finance the war in Iraq and for Bill Gates' and Warren Buffett's tax breaks?

Or did you blame the poor old folk working for minimum wage?

How about the corporate chieftan spending time in jail for stealing from the employee pension fund? Or is he exempt because he spends Sunday mornings in Church and dinated money for the school's basketball team?

Exactly what I told him, what else could it possibly be?  Doh Oh wait, I wonder if he will get kicked out of school for my lies. :D I'll just put a little extra in when they pass the plate this Sunday. ;)

Not that your point isn't valid, but the Corporate thief would say I was wrong and seek forgiveness. The lesbians probably would not seek to correct their ways even though it would keep their child in school.

Neither Ebbers or John Rigas said this. And lesbians correct their ways. I do not believe being a lesbian is against the law. Just people who are taught not to cast stones.

Lesbians correct their ways??? I thought you once argued they were born that way.

The law has no influence on a private school's admittance policies. Thank goodness! Whoo

Do any of you have friends that are gay? I didn't know any until I started my own business 15 years ago. I can't remember if I was always as accepting. Now that I know several couples and like them, it is impossible for me to be prejudiced against them.

I have two long time friends (they don't know each other) that came out of the closet later in life. One was a life long friend from high school. This case is a little interesting because he had an identical twin brother. The other was a good friend from my college fraternity. I'm still friends with both of them now, except I have a whole new set of names to call them ;) Unfortunately I don't personally know any lesbians :D

A) I was being sarcastic.

B) I was referring to the fact that lesbians have nothing to apologize for or seek forgiveness. There is no law they are breaking.

If a private school takes government funds, then it cannot discriminate against lesbians or anyone else. They can't have it both ways.

If the school does not take any public funding then it can do what it wants.
