it is her 15th birthday. this is a huge deal for hispanic girls, kind of like a sweet 16, but bigger. depending on the wealth of the family, these can be huge affairs, rivaling fancy weddings. the girl is called la quinceanera, she is usually dressed/treated like a princess. it is a celebration of her journey to maturity.

traditional gifts include bibles or rosarys, rings, bracelets, earings, necklaces, crosses, tiaras, etc.

it's too bad you can't go, i've been to two of them this year and they are alot of fun, even for a gringo like me. i practice my spanish, my dancing (which needs even more practice than my spanish), and just enjoy the culture and the nice way latin people are so family oriented.

Well, it looks like TD beat me to it. He is right on about everything except that religious gifts aren't really given anymore. We just attended one in the Starlite Room at the Miami beach Wyndham and those parents had to have dropped AT LEAST $50K. What a beautiful party, the choreography was amazing, etc. It could best be compared to a debutante's coming out ball. It is the girl's formal introduction to society. I had one more yrs ago than I care to admit :D at the Marriott in Miami. Mine was a grande affair as well, and I even had portraits taken at Vizcaya (VERY traditional!). Visitors there thought I was a bride. As for what gift to send, I would recommend a Macy's gift card; Bath & Body Works; a check; cash. After all, she is 15 and girls love clothes and shopping. I would think $50 would be sufficient.

It's a coming out party.

By the way, I just saw one on MTV the other night on Sweet Sixteen. Great show. I love to hate it and hate to love it. It's like a car crash and I can't look away.

The gifts can vary with the nationality. In Central America it's OK the bibles and the rosaries, but for Venezuelans and Colombians fashion jewelry, clothes, and gift certificates are more appropriate than religious items since they use to give rosaries and saints images on First Communions instead.

I'm confused pw. Isn't Mis Quince Anos more of a social thing; not a religious sacrament?

It is a HUGE social thing, but from my friends from El Salvador and Honduras, I know that religious gifts (rosaries, crucifixes or saint medals) are very common at "quince aņos" in Central America.

Ok, her Mis Quince will be this weekend. I'm giving the safe gift "Money".

We purchased a money card, which was funny because we had NO idea what is says.

The front reads

En Tus
Quince Anos

and inside

Ilusiones, nuevas experiencias,
mucho por aprender, tanto por conocer...
i Todo esto esto y mucho mas significan
tus Quince Anos

Felicidades

Now you can even lie and tell me we did a good job picking out the card. Whoo and maybe even tell me what is says.:)

Wow, most states have pretty strict laws about that. Did you sign it yet? Is your DNA registered with the state? Run man. Run. ;)
