We placed our reservations back in June, which allowed us to purchase the tickets in advance. Check ticketmaster to see when they go on sale.

The exhibit will be at the Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art from Dec 15th thru Apr 23rd.

I want to hear this song by Steve Martin when I go :)

Lyrics for: King Tut

King Tut (King Tut)
Now when he was a young man,
He never thought he'd see
People stand in line to see the boy king.

(King Tut) How'd you get so funky?
(funky Tut) Did you do the monkey?
Born in Arizona,
Moved to Babylonia (king Tut).

(king Tut) Now, if I'd known
they'd line up just to see him,
I'd trade in all my money
And bought me a museum. (king Tut)

Buried with a donkey (funky Tut)
He's my favorite honkey!
Born in Arizona,
Moved to Babylonia (king Tut)

Dancin' by the Nile, (Disco Tut)
The ladies love his style, (boss Tut)
Rockin' for a mile (rockin' Tut)
He ate a crocodile.

He gave his life for tourism.
Golden idol!
He's an Egyptian
They're sellin' you.

Now, when I die,
now don't think I'm a nut,
don't want no fancy funeral,
Just one like ole king Tut. (king Tut)

He coulda won a Grammy,
Buried in his Jammies,
Born in Arizona, moved to Babylonia,
He was born in Arizona, got a condo made of stone-a,
King Tut!

I spoke to a couple at a wedding Saturday (yes, Christmas Eve) and they had just gone to the exhibit. They said that they were disapointed with it. When I brought up the fact that the artifacts are over 3000 years old they went on and on about how amazing the detail was in them. Then they realized they greatly enjoyed the exhibit, they were just wishing there were more peices to see.

I went to the Tut exhibit last night and was slightly disappointed. I don't know exactly what I was expecting, but I guess I wanted to really see his mummy. Still it was nicely done and I'm glad I saw it. I think the little audio sets added a lot to the experience.

It had been awhile since I was downtown at night. Traffic was very heavy making it so nice to get back to Weston.

We went this past Saturday morning. We enjoyed the exhibit but what made it unpleasant was the severe overcrowding. Even though we had an assigned time, the lines were worse than Disneyworld and once inside the crowd was barely moving. For about $35 ticket x 5, I expected a better experience. Just the Museum trying to milk as many dollars as they can out of it.

Glad I saw it anyhow as I couldn't get tickets in NY the last time the exhibit was here.

Toad, the mummy has never left the Valley of the Kings, by Egyptian law, so he's missed all his own shows!

I had 8:00 tickets for last night and there were no lines whatsoever. I just walked up, picked up the headset and went straight to the little room with the intro video. There were maybe 15 people there that watched the video at that time. It made it nice because I could look at the items very closely and walk around to see the sides & back. I just can't imagine how they crafted those works with the tools available at that time. It is such a shame so many artifacts were lost to looters.

My wife and I went on Saturday..... We were not disappoint, though it would have been nice to see his burial case instead of his great grandmother's. In all the pictures I have seen I thought that was his.

We had tickets for 3pm and arrived at 2:45. There was not too long of a line ahead of us. But it did get very croweded. They allowed way too many people in that you could not go thru at a leisurly pace.

While we were waiting to get in we were fortunite enough to be behind the the A$$hole family ( Nono ). The father must have done his internet research and was telling his family (wife, 2 girls, and a boy) all about the (wrong) history of King Tut. I figured he didn't know what he was talking about when he said that he played on Batman before he died Doh (just kidding). He wasn't happy to just tell his family his wealth of information to his own family, he spoke loud enough for anyone within 2 city blocks to hear him. He went on to tell them that Tut actually died because he broke his leg. That's right go and scare the kids about broken bones..... he did not bother to add it was probably due to an infection caused by the broken leg.

One daugher (about 14) kept telling him to stop the lecture, he was getting pissed off and telling her not to listen as the rest of the family was interested. They were so interested the son (about 9) was hanging from one of the poles that hold the ropes to guide you in and literaly sleeping. Everytime the line moved the family moved up and left him hanging, I kept having to give his foot a little kick so he would wake up and get out of the way. The other daughter (about 7) was too busy playing in her princess costume to care what he was saying, and the wife was just out in left field.

Not surprisingly when we got up to the front to get the headsets know it all Dad pulls out a 50 dollar bill and says "I'll take one headset". Thinking we would be cordoned off by these ropes the whole exhibit, I said to my wife "If this guy thinks he is going to listen about each item and then explain it to his family he's gonna be the next person they find in Tut's tomb. I made sure he heard me too.

Yes, I had preordered them when I bought the tickets. I was hoping the volume was loud enough so I didn't have to listen to the clown ahead of me.

I was glad I got them, I would hit the button and listen to the exhibit we were looking at then when Ihad a chance to get closer I would play it again.

We went today and I thought it was fascinating. I cannot believe the great condition these artifacts were in. And I totally agree w/ Donna: the headsets were awesome. The only thing was the crowds--there were A LOT of people. When we arrived, there was a huge line but thankfully I was able to wait for my mom at the entrance of the elevator and not have to stand for 40 minutes (I timed it) to get in. Everyone was very polite, even when it got too close for comfort.

Oh, and Yogamom--why did your daughter think that these were replicas? I checked and every item on display was at least 3,000 yrs old!

The "replicas" were placed in the burial chambers and would become real in the afterlife.

This is ridiculous. Did the blind folks really think they could touch the exhibits or that special replicas should have been made? How do they enjoy live football and hockey games? Do they get to touch the players? The restroom part may have merit, if they in fact don't have facilities that are adapted to handicapped.

Disabled patrons file suit against Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art over Tut
--------------------

By Vanessa Blum
South Florida Sun-Sentinel

February 11, 2006

Tom Ryan was born blind, but the 65-year-old Pembroke Pines resident says he appreciates art and culture as much as anyone else.

So when Ryan went to the King Tut exhibit at the Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art in January he was extremely disappointed.

The popular exhibit features more than 130 ancient Egyptian artifacts taken from King Tut's tomb and other gravesites, but Ryan, his wife, and a friend, all three legally blind, could only "see" the 19 that were described in an audio tour narrated by actor Omar Sharif.

Now Ryan, president of the Broward County chapter of the National Federation of the Blind, is one of five local residents suing the museum and exhibit organizers in federal court. They say the exhibit violates the Americans With Disabilities Act, a 1990 law that requires public buildings to take reasonable measures to accommodate disabled patrons.

"No one is asking for a discount," Ryan said. "We just want to be able to enjoy the same things other people can enjoy."

While making a museum exhibit accessible to the blind may not be as simple as installing a wheelchair ramp, experts in disability law say the same principles apply.

Scott LaBarre, president of the National Association of Blind Lawyers, said museums can accommodate visually impaired visitors and comply with the ADA by providing guided tours, descriptive audio tours, or replicas of some artifacts that blind patrons can touch. New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art offers a number of "touch tours" including one featuring six ancient Egyptian sculptures.

"Congress mandated in passing the ADA that individuals with disabilities must have access to all aspects of our society and that includes entertainment," LaBarre said.

Two Broward County residents with physical disabilities requiring the use of motorized scooters are also part of the suit. They say they were unable to maneuver through the exhibit due to barriers.

Joshua Entin, the Miami lawyer who filed the lawsuit Feb. 6, said the two women were also forced to wait 45 minutes to use the elevator and had to leave the museum altogether to use the restroom of a nearby restaurant. He would not elaborate on the specific problems they encountered. The suit seeks a judicial order requiring the museum to comply with the ADA and reimbursement for all legal fees and expenses.

Museum spokesman Michael Mills said he had not seen the suit, but that thousands of patrons, including many who were disabled, have enjoyed the exhibit. According to Mills, the museum provides wheelchairs to patrons who request them and stations docents throughout the exhibit to assist visitors.

"We take ADA compliance seriously and have taken many steps to make the exhibit accessible," Mills wrote in an e-mailed statement. "Until having received this filing we had not received another access complaint."Mark Lach, vice president of exhibit organizer Arts and Exhibitions International, said that he and his team always keep the needs of disabled visitors in mind and try to be responsive to suggestions. When the exhibit moved from Los Angeles to Fort Lauderdale, Lach said changes were made specifically to accommodate the greater number of seniors expected to attend. But Lach also said no measures are in place specifically to assist blind patrons.

Touchable replicas of artifacts "would be something to consider," Lach said. "I'm always looking for opportunities to make the experience better for everyone."
