State of Emergency Declared in France
Nov 8, 9:28 AM (ET)

By JAMEY KEATEN

PARIS (AP) - President Jacques Chirac declared a state of emergency Tuesday, paving the way for curfews to be imposed on riot-hit cities and towns in an extraordinary measure to halt France's worst civil unrest in decades after 12 nights of violence.

Police, meanwhile, said overnight unrest Monday-Tuesday, while still widespread and destructive, was not as violent as previous nights.

"The intensity of this violence is on the way down," National Police Chief Michel Gaudin said, citing fewer attacks on public buildings and fewer direct clashes between youths and police. He said rioting was reported in 226 towns across France, compared to nearly 300 the night before.

In related news, President Jacques Chirac has called an emergency cabinet meeting to discuss how and when France can negotiate a surrender.

Restive France Declares State of Emergency

By JOHN LEICESTER

PARIS (AP) - The French government declared a state of emergency Tuesday after nearly two weeks of rioting, and the prime minister said the nation faced a "moment of truth." There seems to be a great amount of confusion as to the circumstances of surrender. Chirac says "any power bigger than a troop of Belgian Girl Scouts will have us running for white flags".

Toad - do you have a thing for the French? :)

I do feel bad for what is going on there though. It must be horrible for the people not involved in it who are trying to work and get on with their day to day lives.

I love France I just can't stand the people!

The problem is that France made colonies of a large part of northern African and many of them moved to France. Now these Arabs that see themselves as French are shunned by the non-Arab French. The Arab French are poor and have had enough of the indifference. The radical Islamic element has united these poor people to violence which is now out of hand. If the French don't come down on it like a German jack boot, it will spread to neighboring countries. I would bet we see very similar things start to happen in Germany.

I can agree with some of what you've said, but come on - all the French people. I have French friends.

I'm just having a hard time with this radical Islamic thing. It is very scary. And when you add poverty into the mix... terrifying.

The French are learning the same hard lesson the British just recently received. Tyring to appease the radical Muslims is a lost cause, they will just come back for you later. They should reach out to moderates that want to be part of the society and crush the radicals by any means.

Oh where to start. I guess reference the thread "French can't stand an American champion", or remember who would not let our planes cross their country in the Gulf war. Maybe you would recall that the great Phill Ligget was not served food in a restaurant during this year's tour because he was speaking English. I deal with these arrogant Frog assholes every day and can't say I like any of them. They only like Americans until the dollars run out.

The Romanian leader, who arrived Monday in Paris for a two-day visit, said in an interview published Monday that the European Union is having trouble ensuring its own security, and that only the United States and Britain are "really interested" in the security of the Black Sea states.
