KOLKATA, India (Reuters) - A woman receiving treatment for diabetes at a state-run hospital in eastern India lost one of her eyes after ants nibbled away at it, officials said on Tuesday.

The patient recovering from a post-surgery infection shrieked for help as the ants attacked her on Sunday night, but nurses told her it was normal to feel pain from the infection.

On Monday, the patient's family saw a gaping hole with swarming ants in it when they lifted the bandage on her left eye.

Authorities of the Sambhunath Hospital in Kolkata said they were probing the incident.

"It's not uncommon for ants to attack diabetic patients. We have set up a committee to investigate the unfortunate incident," hospital superintendent A. Adhikary said.

Scampering rats and stray cats and dogs sharing bed space with patients are not uncommon sights at India's overcrowded state-run hospitals that are used by millions of poor and middle-class people.

They had to set up a committee? I guess if you are unfortunate enough to have to rely on these people for care, that you better have a family member stay with you and take care of you.

It must be real sanitary having rats, ants, and stray cats and dogs running around.

I wonder if the rats and stray dogs are running around the first class hospitals for their international clients--er, I mean patients??

Nope. India is a land of class systems. There are the haves and have nots. The have nots really don't have a pot to piss in.

And they really can't even try to change classes or better themselves in the class society. The lower classes are really shunned I believe. How sad that people are like this.

They are called the 'Untouchables'. Years ago, I had a Brahman (the highest class) working for me. He explained there was no such thing as 'upward mobility' in their society.

They all marry within their castes. He saw nothing wrong with the whole situation and said it was just the Untoucables 'karma' for something bad they did in a previous life.

I try to rotate the avatars. One of the first things I learned in psychology 101 is that variety is the SPICE of Life. What is the short bus?

The short bus refers to the smaller school bus that transports special ed or special needs kids.

a sidestreet from the topic, we saw a documetary on the children of prostitutes in India, wow it was a pretty intense movie. Talk about appreciating how good we have it. I think it would even be good for older kids to see, there is no nudity though the language is pretty rough.
