Wife Accused Of Trying To Poison Husband
SANFORD, Fla. -- A Seminole County man thought his wife of 20 years was trying to keep him healthy. But she's accused of trying to kill him with a cup of poison. The man thought he was drinking green tea, but it was actually anti-freeze.
Alisa Freeburn is charged with attempted murder. Her husband said he didn't know why he got severely ill after drinking a cup of green tea nearly two weeks ago, until he got medical tests back.
Freeburn posted her $5,000 bond late Wednesday afternoon. Her husband said he doesn't know where she got the antifreeze or why she would try to serve it to him as a drink.
"I tasted it. It tasted horrible. She said, 'I've already had some, it's good for you drink it.' As far as I know, if it's good for you it's supposed to taste bad, so I drank it," Richard Freeburn said.
But the glass of fluorescent green liquid was not the green tea he thought it was and it certainly wasn't good for him.
"I couldn't see straight. I was seeing double. I literally couldn't focus my eyes. People couldn't understand me when I tried to talk," he explained.
Paramedics took him to South Seminole Hospital, where his kidneys failed. Lab tests showed ethylene glycol, or antifreeze, in his system, more than six times what's considered toxic. Ten times would have killed him. Investigators think his wife Alisa tried to.
"We believe he did not do this to himself. We believe it was given to him by her, given the totality, her attitude, it appears to be attempted murder," said Steve Olson, Seminole County Sheriff's Office.
"I hate it. This is my wife for 20 years. I love her very much. She's a good mother, a good wife. I hate it for her, I don't know what to think," Richard said.
But he said he definitely wants her prosecuted and punished. A judge ordered her to stay away from their home and from Richard. His biggest concern is for their two children, with their father barely out of the hospital and their mother barely out of jail.
"My family's here to help take care of me and my kids, and we're gonna do the best we can, that's all we can do," Richard said.
Alisa's attorney did not want to go on camera, but said there was much more to the story. He accused the husband of trying to harm himself earlier this year.
Richard said he had absolutely nothing to do with this and detectives agree.
Alisa will go before a judge in January.
