It doesn't make you want to run out and get plastic surgery seeing those photos. If the rich Hollywood celebrities can't even get good results, imagine the odds of a regular person getting good work.

State web site discloses once-secret data on infections, deaths, prices at hospitals
By Bob LaMendola, South Florida Sun-Sentinel Health Writer
In a nationwide first, Floridians have a new tool to assess local hospitals -- an online state analysis of every hospital's track record for infections, deaths, complications and even prices.
Although health care specialists say the new Web site is limited and does not allow for direct hospital-to-hospital comparisons, they say public disclosure of previously secret data on medical outcomes could spur hospitals to work harder to combat preventable conditions.
"All the hospitals are aware that people are watching now," said Dr. Paul Barach, former director of the University of Miami Patient Safety Center and a member of a state advisory panel on hospital-based infections. "They will want to look good."
Florida is the first state to disclose data on infections and complications for each of its 207 hospitals. Other states merely collect the data, and only five release it in statewide compilations.
The Florida Web site -- www.floridacomparecare.gov (http://www.floridacomparecare.gov)-- details each hospital's rate of medical problems in seven categories, such as bedsores, hospital-based infections and post-operative complications.
It also lists each hospital's death rates among patients in 10 areas, including heart attacks, strokes, pneumonia and heart surgery.
Some health experts said the state data indicate all hospitals could do better, but overall South Florida hospitals score about average.
The hospital industry had opposed disclosing the data, but the state Legislature and Gov. Jeb Bush passed a law in 2004 requiring it.
"It gives consumers some information that's useful. If they're going to go have an elective surgical procedure, going online to look at the hospital's infection rate would help them," said Alan Levine, secretary of the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration, which runs the Web site.
Consumers can use the data to ask questions of their doctors or surgeon before a hospital stay, and they can ask what preventive measures a hospital will take to limit complications.
The new tool cheered advocates pushing for more action to reduce health complications from hospital stays. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has estimated that 90,000 people die every year from infections caught at hospitals.
Florida's analysis shows about 2.5 percent of patients statewide develop bedsores, less than 1 percent overall develop major infections and about 1.5 percent develop life-threatening systemic infections after surgery.
"In some things we're doing very good, and in some areas we need work," Barach said. "We have a lot of hospital infections and we haven't focused on it."
The state rated each hospital in each category, and adjusted the scores based on the severity of its patients' illnesses, so that hospitals with sicker patients would not be penalized when compared to others. An average score was called "as expected."
South Florida hospitals generally received "expected" rates of complications, but not in all areas:
Seven of 16 hospitals in Broward County, but none in Palm Beach, reported more bedsores in patients than expected, with rates ranging from 3.5 to 6 percent of patients. Two in Broward and four of 13 in Palm Beach reported fewer cases than expected.
Six hospitals in Broward and three Palm Beach reported a higher rate of serious infections than expected.
Three hospitals in Broward and one in Palm Beach County reported more stroke patients died than expected, with 13 to 16 percent death rates.
"Some of them are doing a better job than others at preventing infections," said Lisa McGiffert, coordinator of the Stop Hospital Infections Project at Consumers Union, publisher of Consumer Reports magazine. "They all need to improve. Any hospital doing average or the same as everyone else, that's not good enough."
Hospital officials emphasized that the state data show they are doing well, in general, with low complication rates.
Florida nurses contended that the infection rates are high because hospitals have cut back on nurses, making them overworked.
"When you are too busy, that's when you get sloppy. You don't wash your hands as you should or you don't put the gloves on when you should," said Betsy Marville of Boynton Beach, an intensive care nurse at St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach..
Health care specialists on all sides of the issue cautioned consumers not to try to compare one hospital's rate against another's, saying the information is not precise enough to allow apples-to-apples comparisons. Among the problems: correctly adjusting for hospitals with high numbers of very sick patients and transfers from other institutions.
Consumers also may look at separate medical-quality data from the federal government, available at www.hospitalcompare.hhs.gov.
"Consumers want to be able to compare one hospital to another. They can't right now," said Kim Streit, vice president of health care research and information for the Florida Hospital Association.

Straight in at number one is the impossibily irresistible Sex Bomb, scented with the 'come hither' fragrance of jasmine and ylang ylang. Soak yourself in its pink, scented waters before a promising night out. Clary sage essential oil, as well as being a reputed aphrodisiac, helps you to keep a balanced viewpoint and a clear mind, so your head will not be turned by all the offers of champagne, caviar, lobster and rides home in a ferrari. However, the Sex bomb is not just for nights out; it makes a wonderful start to a quiet night in. Its sumptuous luxurious fragrance fills the whole household to turn your home into a pleasure palace. Share if it you dare.

These guys sound fun. I love their party rules.
1) If you take off your shoes, it doesn’t count as passing out.
2) If you wake up knowing where you are, how you got there, and what you did, you had a good time.
2a) If you don’t remember, do not ask. Connect the dots is fun for kids, but not for drinkers.
3) Supplying alcohol for half the city of Richmond will make you the most popular person for the night, providing you don’t mind answering to “the guy that bought the beer” when all the random people forget your name again.
4) When passing out during a raging party it’s very likely to have “****er”, “Bitch”, “Pussy”, or any number of slurs written on your face and/or body, and all misspelled. The mandatory penis that winds up on your check, however, will be drawn with anatomical precision every time.
4a) When you find something written, be sure to check the rest of your body before leaving for work. Writing on the back of your neck is never suitable for for the office, but especially not when it says “I love the cock”.
5) If you wind up sleeping somewhere out of the ordinary, don’t be surprised when pictures of random partiers spooning with you and giving a drunken thumbs-up begin circulating around town.
6) Never, never, never place your full can next to the ash can. No matter how infallible you feel, you will **** up.
7) When waking up in “wet”, do not ask under any circumstances. If tempted, think about who you were drinking with and what they might be capable of. You’ll get a “you spilled” at best. At worst, no direct eye contact.
8) When having a kegger, here’s a good equation to keep in mind:
(# of people you called*2)*(# of kegs you have to the 2nd power) = how many people will actually arrive at your house.
9) When committing a party foul, expect to be asked to suck it up… no matter where you spilled. Nobody likes an alcohol abuser.
10) No matter how bad the cleanup, hangover, or fines, if you and your friends had fun, it was worth it.
Next time you get pissed off, consider this web site (http://www.pissedoffpete.com/index.html). I will admit I have give it some serious thought, and then never got around to it.

Five great technology-based freebies
By Marshall Loeb, MarketWatch
December 24, 2006
The best things in life are free -- and they're even better when they're high-tech (or at least seem that way). Here's a roundup of five great technology-based freebies that will help you work and play more efficiently:
Backpack is a simple Web application that allows users to create shared Web pages that can include to-do lists, notes and more. Your office staff or book club can stay easily organized with this free tool. Find it at www.backpackit.com (http://www.backpackit.com)
FreeConference.com (http://www.freeconference.com) offers the ability to set up -- you guessed it -- free conference calls through its Web site. Though callers have to join by calling a long-distance number, there is no fee for the conference service. So use your cell phone minutes and save.
Who needs a fax machine when you have eFax? You can receive faxes for free through this easy-to-use service -- you'll just likely have to make do with a fax number that's not in your local area code. Try it at efax.com (http://www.efax.com).
Finding a free wi-fi hot spot is like discovering gold. But why leave it up to serendipity? Check out the Wi-Fi Freespot Directory at wififreespot.com (http://www.wififreespot.com) before you leave the house so you know exactly where to log on.
If you find yourself in a store debating whether you should buy in person or online, just refer to ShopEdge. This free service for your smart phone allows you to check prices and reviews at Amazon.com before you buy. Download it from www.edgeq.com (http://www.edgeq.com).
