I think minority status may be going the way of the buggy whip.

EL PASO, Texas (AP) - Texas has become the fourth state to have a non-white majority population, the U.S. Census Bureau said Thursday, a trend driven by a surging number of Hispanics moving to the state.

According to the population estimates based on the 2000 Census, about 50.2 percent of Texans are now minorities. In the 2000 Census, minorities made up about 47 percent of the population in the second-largest state.

Texas joins California, New Mexico and Hawaii as states with majority-minority populations - with Hispanics the largest group in every state but Hawaii, where it is Asian-Americans.

Five other states - Maryland, Mississippi, Georgia, New York and Arizona - aren't far behind, with about 40 percent minorities.

America needs to redefine minorities. Basically we all minorities, depending on definition. Racial, Religious, Country of Origin, male or female, senior citizen. Which minority are you in.

I am a male, Jewish, Russian Descent, white and a senior citizen and married.

What are you-all?

I am Cuban, American, and white--although the kids now use the term "white" to signify Anglo ONLY. Growing up, there were times I did feel like a minority. It wasn't until high school that there were more Hispanics around. When I went away to UF (1990) there were NO Hispanics anywhere; and to be totally honest that was one of the reasons I came back home after a year. I missed that. Now, UF courts the Hispanic kids and there is a Hispanic union and everything.

I am editing to add that my great grandparents were from Spain (Asturias, actually). Oh, and I am a female :) One mroe thing: I am tall (5'9")...not a lot of women are tall.

I'm Protestant, white, of English, Scottish, Irish, and German descent. I'm female which counted as a minority at one time. I don't know if it gets you points anymore.
I don't know a second language. I think this is becoming a minority as many people I know speak 3 or more languages.

I completely agree on that one. The food is great, and the women are some of the most beautiful in the world. There is just the right mix of European and native to produce natural beauties. If they could just get rid of the dictator, it is also (or was) a great vacation destination.

You've told me the name of the chocolate before but now I can't remember because I couldn't find any. What is the name and where can I get it? The beer, is it Presidente, or is that in the Dom. Rep?

The chocolate is Chocolates El Rey (http://www.chocolates-elrey.com/) , all the Whole Foods and Wild Oats carry it, sometimes even the Publix.
The Beer is Polar, you can get it at Sedanos.
Presidente is the beer from DomRep.

Food, women, beaches (not the female kind :) ) are all great. I enjoyed the mountains around Merida (sp?) too. The beer not so much. I do remember the Polar, but it was only so-so. I've got to get my hands on some Chocolatesw El Rey.
