NHL Reaches Cable Deal With Comcast

Aug 18, 12:48 AM (ET)

NEW YORK (AP) - NHL games will air on Outdoor Life Network for at least the next two seasons.
The league finalized a two-year deal with Comcast Corp. - the owner of OLN - late Wednesday night after ESPN declined to match the agreement that will pay the NHL $65 million this season and $70 million in 2006-07.

The agreement between Comcast and the NHL was approved by the league's board of governors last week. ESPN, which resumed regular broadcast of NHL games in 1992, had until Wednesday night to match the contract but decided to pass.

"Over the years, thousands of great NHL moments were presented to our fans through the lenses of ESPN cameras," NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said. "ESPN was a supportive partner, and both the National Hockey League and ESPN enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship. We wish ESPN continued success."

The new deal can be extended up to six years. For the 2007-08 season, Comcast would pay the NHL $72.5 million but that number could go higher based on contingencies.

OLN, best known for providing live coverage of the Tour de France, will show between 58 and 78 regular-season games, as well as conference quarterfinals and the entire conference finals - with the exception of some weekend windows that could move games to NBC in both playoff rounds.

OLN will show Games 1 and 2 of the Stanley Cup finals before NBC takes over for the remainder of the series.

The deal with Comcast goes beyond just television rights. Comcast will bring the NHL Network to cable systems in the United States, and provide on-demand game broadcasts and computer streaming of live games.

This is the second time in recent months that ESPN has declined a deal with the NHL. In June, ESPN passed on a $60 million option under the previous contract. The network tried to retain the rights for less money in talks with the league.

ESPN contended that the value of NHL games had dropped substantially following the lockout that wiped out all of last season.

"We worked very hard to build and sustain our relationship with the league and would have liked to continue," George Bodenheimer, the president of ESPN, Inc. and ABC Sports said in a statement late Wednesday night. "However, given the prolonged work stoppage and the league's TV ratings history, no financial model even remotely supports the contract terms offered. We wish the NHL all the best."

The NHL will begin a two-year deal with NBC for over-the-air broadcasts beginning with the upcoming season. That is a profit-sharing arrangement, a deal similar to what the network has with the Arena Football League and the National Lacrosse League in which it pays no rights fee to televise games.

like a lot of people down here, i never really was interested in hockey until we got the panthers. i have to say it is an amazing game to see in person. i think of all the sports, this is the one that is the most dramatically different in person than on tv.

i really did miss it last season.

That is funny because I like to float around in the pool and watch hockey on the TV that is mounted outside. It is really ironic that we are this far south and watching a game on ice. I will say there are some excellent youth hockey players from Florida. When we travel up north to play, we are treated like the Jamaican bobsled team. Last year in the President's Cup tournament a local high school team went undefeated beating teams from Canada and Minnesota.

My son's best friend that he grew up with here on the block got a hockey scholarship to University of British Columbia. He is Jamaican.

My son played hockey and swam. He loved both, but at some point he had to choose one. I talked him into swimming because I thought he'd have a better chance of doing well. Mistake.

We'll probably go to some Panther games this year. It's always a good time, just have to watch those pucks if you are down low. I saw one guy take one off the forehead, kind of put a damper on his night.

For me baseball is the game to see in person, on TV it is sooo boring in person it's much better.

I'll be watching on TV. We had season tickets for a long time. Being there in person was around $5500 for the season. We had great seats. It was fun to be there, but I would rather spend the money another way. I'll watch from home.

It was a shame to loose the season, and very hard on young players who don't make the big salaries, but it was necessary for the good of the league. A salary cap had to be implemented or only a few big franchises could be competitive. Hopefully clubs like the Panthers can compete with the Redwings, Rangers, etc.

How do you guys feel about the team after last years strike?

Arbitrator Grants Panthers' Luongo $3.2 Million Salary

Email this Story

Aug 25, 12:55 PM (ET)

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - An arbitrator granted Florida Panthers goalie Roberto Luongo a one-year, $3.2 million contract Thursday.
Luongo, who has expressed frustration over being taken to arbitration, rejected a five-year, $25 million deal before Wednesday's hearing with arbitrator Vernon Gill.

In the 2003-04 season, the last played before the lockout, Luongo set NHL records for most saves (2,303) and most shots faced (2,475). No goalie with more than 50 starts had a better save percentage than Luongo's .931. He was fifth in the league with seven shutouts.

Luongo, who could become an unrestricted free agent in two years, would have made $2.1 million in 2004-05 - if not for the lockout.

I think it sends a clear message that the days of big contracts are over. It is better to take the team offer because arbitration will not help. He is a great goalie, but now it looks like it will be one year and out.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - By adding No. 1 overall pick Sidney Crosby to a team already restocked with talented free agents, the Pittsburgh Penguins feel they've turned back the clock to the early 1990s - when they were two-time Stanley Cup champions and perennial contenders.

The terms of Crosby's three-year contract, $850,000 in salary each season with the chance to double that with performance incentives, were dictated largely by the league's new labor agreement, making those figures less compelling than Crosby's potential to make Pittsburgh hockey's best team once again.

"It's like it was back in the early '90s when we were coming to camp with a chance to win a championship every year," general manager Craig Patrick said of Crosby's signing Friday.

"I feel very fortunate to be in this situation," Crosby said. "A lot of guys ... who are drafted early go to a team that's maybe rebuilding, but that's not the case here."

The Penguins appear to be completely rebuilt as they prepare to open camp Tuesday with a week's worth of practice in Pittsburgh before moving to their Wilkes-Barre, Pa., minor league affiliate's arena.

Crosby will make his NHL debut Oct. 5 - Mario Lemieux's 40th birthday - at New Jersey.

When the puck drops that night, the Penguins will have completed an offseason unlike any other, during which the NHL became the first major North American sports league to lose an entire season to a labor dispute.

The Penguins stocked up on high-profile free agents like defensemen Sergei Gonchar and Lyle Odelein, forwards Ziggy Palffy and John LeClair, and goaltender Jocelyn Thibault. Now comes Crosby, who's helped sell tickets at a record pace since the Penguins won the NHL draft lottery July 22.

In the NHL's last season, 2003-04, the Penguins averaged just 11,877 fans a game and finished with 58 points (23-47-8-4) - both the worst in the league.

Since winning the rights to Crosby, the Penguins have already sold more tickets for this season than they did in the last season, and believe their on-ice outlook is much improved.

"Five or six teams have a real good chance (to win the Stanley Cup) and we feel we're one of those teams," said owner-player Mario Lemieux, who has helped resuscitate the team's fortunes several times with comebacks from injury and retirement, and by putting a group together to buy the team out of bankruptcy six years ago.

Crosby's contract terms were largely a formality dictated by the NHL's new collective bargaining agreement limiting first-year players to $850,000 in salary and $850,000 in statistical and playing-time bonuses. Crosby could earn slightly more than $2 million more each season in team and league bonuses, but would have to be the league's rookie of the year, scoring leader and win the Hart trophy as the MVP.

The negotiations were so simple that Patrick, who has a reputation as a hard bargainer, quipped, "I surrendered right away."

Crosby has been touted as another Wayne Gretzky or Lemieux, who didn't quibble with that notion.

"I think so. Not only (because of) his talent, but the way he thinks about the game," Lemieux said. "He's dedicated to the game of hockey. A lot of guys have had talent in the past, but to put the mind that he has with his talent is special."

Crosby, 18, has scored 120 goals and 183 assists in 121 games the past two seasons with Rimouski in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, and was Canada's major junior player of the year both seasons. He became youngest player to score for Canada's world juniors team when he had a goal at the championships at age 16 years, 4 months, 24 days.

Lemieux said Crosby was ready to play in the NHL last year. Crosby is confident, but more cautious in assessing his ability to measure up to Lemieux or Gretzky.

"I'm looking at it as short-term as possible. I want to have a good camp and push myself to raise my game as best I can," Crosby said. "Obviously, this is a new level, but the pressure has always been there. I've always put a lot of pressure on myself to perform."

New game but the same crap from the Panthers. Six or seven power plays, the last one 6 on 4 with no pp goals. This will kill them over the course of the season.

FSN was really clear tonight, but OLN has sucked eggs with static like white dots on the screen. It's hard to see the puck at times on OLN games.

You got that right. The lack of offense with the new rule changes is going to make it a long season. The old days of neutral zone trap and grabbing in the offensive zone are gone and now you actually have to light the lamp several times a game to win. Good to see some Panthers drop the mitts last night though.Whoo

By The Associated Press -

Philadelphia's Antero Niittymaki was caught watching the big video board when he allowed the Pittsburgh Penguins to score the tying goal with a shot from beyond center ice in the third period. Doh

It isn't clear exactly what caught the eye of the Flyers' goalie on Friday night, but you could hardly blame him if he was distracted by the wildness that was taking place in Atlanta.

Niittymaki got back on his game in time and held off the Penguins long enough for the Flyers to win 6-5 in overtime.

But there was no order down south where the host Thrashers were routed 9-1 by the Toronto Maple Leafs and took out their frustrations in ways that led to an on-ice brawl.

Jeff O'Neill scored three goals but the rough third period quickly became the story of the game.

Toronto's Darcy Tucker was left bleeding from a gash to his forehead that required 20 stitches to close. That came courtesy of Atlanta's Andy Sutton, who was ejected for attempting to injure.

But that wasn't even the first blow. The initial fight broke out after Eric Boulton hit Maple Leafs forward Eric Lindros.

By SANDY SHORE
DENVER (AP) - The Dish Network said Thursday it pulled OLN from its system after the cable channel failed to provide NHL games to the nation's second-largest satellite television provider.

EchoStar Communications Corp. spokesman Marc Lumpkin said the network did not show games Oct. 10-11 and Monday and Tuesday as advertised. "We were not given advance notice that they would not show the programming," he said.

Best known for broadcasting the Tour de France, the Comcast Corp.-owned OLN has taken over broadcasting NHL games on cable from ESPN.

"We are confident that Comcast will successfully resolve any OLN distribution issues," NHL spokesman Frank Brown said.

The contract dispute between EchoStar and OLN revolves around OLN's placement in a higher-priced channel package by Dish Network.

OLN set a requirement that the channel must be seen by 40 percent of a cable or satellite TV system's viewers in order for it to broadcast the NHL games. It said Dish Network has failed to meet that requirement.

"We are surprised and disappointed that Dish has unilaterally chosen to stop providing OLN to its customers, and denied fans the opportunity to watch sports coverage on OLN," OLN spokeswoman Amy Phillips said.

Lumpkin declined to comment on the specifics of the dispute.

EchoStar would have to move the channel from its top package to a lower-cost package that might have fewer channels but more viewers. That would raise the fees Dish Network viewers pay.

"We work hard to provide choice for customers and to keep prices low," said Eric Sahl, an EchoStar senior vice president. "Most of our customers have made the decision they do not want to pay the additional cost of watching the channel."

EchoStar hasn't been afraid to take on networks before. In March 2004, it pulled Viacom Inc. programming - including MTV, the Comedy Channel and Nickelodeon - from Dish Network for two days until an agreement was struck on a long-term contract.

Based in suburban Englewood, EchoStar's Dish Network has about 11.4 million customers.
