Anyone see the paris roubaix yestereday on OLN? I have it saved on TiVo and glimpsed at it this morning.
George Hincapie (US Team Discovery and form Armstrong Lieutenant) an early favorite to win it (2nd place last year) was riding along and it appears his handlebar stem broke right off and the crashed.
What a bum break. Hope he is alright, couldn't find any news of it on the Internet.

If you haven't seen the whole thing, right up to the podium, then I won't spoil it for you. It was full of drama and heart break just as the Hell of the North should be. What a man's race! I feel so sorry for Hincapie because he had a real shot at it until he broke his stem.

Hmmmm..... I would kinda like like you to ruin the drama for me, I am real curious now and won't be able to watch it for a while.
The way I saw George was I weas fast fromwarding to see who won, when I saw him lose his handle bars I was topo bummed out and turned it off.
I wonder what happened that the stem broke, or was it from the cobblestone pounding . Had it been Lance I sure there would be hell to pay.

George took a spill early in the race, but quickly got back into pack. I bet that he had a carbon stem that cracked and later broke under the pressure of the cobble stones. There was a select break away with all the contenders including Tom Boonen, but two Discovery riders along with Fabian Cancellara. Later Cancellara (CSC) got cleanly away from Boonen who got isolated with no team mates. It really showed how even the most powerful gets beat up without team mates. They came to some rail road tracks and Cancellara went through before the barriers went down. The barriers closed and the two Discovery guys and one other went through before the train arrived. Seconds later the group with Boonen had to stop for 30 seconds or so while a train passed. They were absolutely in a state of panic. Cancellara rides into the velodrome at Roubaix alone, and the group of three later enter to race it out track style with Discovery picking up 2nd & 3rd place. I forget who got the 4th spot. Later the Boonen group came onto the track and he blew them away in a sprint finish for 5th, or so it would seem. Later the French judges disqualify the 3 riders containing the two Discovery riders for going around the train barriers so Boonen ends up with 2nd place. Got to love the French.Nono I wonder if Lance being part owner of Discovery has anything to do with the judges decision?;)

I just shake my head everytime he does that.
I was just at Z's so Alex could take care of that noise my bike making. He said that it was George's Trek fork that broke. But the picture clearly shows it's the stem.

Actually the stem looks to be intact, but the steerer tube that the stem attaches to appears to have broken off at the head tube. It is usually a carbon tube on that model of bike.
APRIL 11 - Peter Van Petegem’s Davitamon-Lotto team has lodged a complaint with the UCI over their rider’s disqualification in last Sunday's Paris-Roubaix. The Belgian, who finished second behind winner Fabien Cancellara (CSC), was disqualified along with Discovery Channel teammates Leif Hoste of Belgium and Vladimir Gusev of Russia, after the trio ignored a barrier at a railway crossing and continued racing without waiting for the train to pass.
Hincapie stateside for surgery
George Hincapie was scheduled to undergo surgery on his right shoulder Tuesday in the United States, according to Discovery Channel sporting director Dirk Demol.
The 32-year-old American, who crashed in Sunday's Paris-Roubaix, sustained a fracture between the shoulder and the clavicle, Demol said, adding that the injury will not keep him out of the Tour de France.
"George will have obviously to give up the Tour of Georgia, but he will return in Dauphiné Libéré," added Demol.
Attention France: In Georgia, they stop the train so a bike race can pass.....(yesterday's Tour de Georgia stage)
