NEW YORK - Three major hurricanes will strike the United States this year, with the storm-battered Gulf Coast most at risk in June and July, forecaster AccuWeather predicted Monday.

The outlook comes after a record-setting hurricane season in 2005 that devastated New Orleans and other coastal cities along the Gulf, and dealt a heavy blow to the U.S. oil industry that sent energy prices to record highs.

“The 2006 storm season will be a creeping threat,” said AccuWeather Chief Forecaster Joe Bastardi. He projected that five hurricanes, three of them with winds over 110 miles per hour, would hit the U.S. coastline.

Most people I have been talking to are already getting prepared. Practically everyone has said they are buying an air conditioner unit that they can run off their generators. I have started making my list and will be pretty well set by June 1.

A friend is getting an a/c unit at Home Depot. It's around $500 I think and has wheels so she can move it easily. (She isn't married so she doesn't have anyone to help lug the stuff around). She said Home Depot had the best prices on gas cans. She bought several.

The best price I have found on gas is Costco, but I wouldn't even say it is cheap.

That's the best idea. It depends on the damage and whether I would need to be here to try to fix anything. My parents were without power for two weeks during Wilma, but had to get temporary fixes done. We had two rooms gutted and had temporary repairs to the roof as it lost a section.
If we and my parents had no damage, I would clean up the yard and drive to the Clermont house.

Is anyone getting prepared? I bought 4 5 gallon gas cans, batteries and flashlights. Tubby picked up the a/c at Home Depot. My neighbor drove up while I was working in the yard and he just picked up gas cans at Ace Hardware for $12 each for six gallon cans. I told him I thought that was too high (even if we assume they might be better quality?) when I bought 5 gallon ones for $5. He said that Home Depot and Lowes were out the other day so he went to Ace. I think I talked him into taking them back and going back to Lowes or Home Depot as they are restocking constantly. He is also looking into the a/c unit like we bought. We said we would try it out over the weekend so he could see what he thought before he bought one.

I like the idea of leaving if it is bad, but have to take into account my (elderly) parents and mother-in-law. If circumstances are such that they can't leave and are badly off, I certainly can't leave them without help, so I'm going to have everything I can think of.

Tomorrow I will be in the 7th week of my 6 - 8 weeks to get my accordion shutters installed.

I've heard over and over again from my wife that they better not make our house look bad. I keep telling her they will be noticeable, but they shouldn't look bad. But I know she will make me do some additional landscaping to make them less noticeable in the front and side yards. I was ready for that and already submitted, and received ARB approval to do some new landscaping in each.

All I know is with them installed I will have much more peace of mind with approaching hurricanes. 11 hours to put the old ones up the first time (by myself) and 5 hours the second time (with help) is a bit too much. With the new ones I should have the whole closed up tight in about 45 minutes or so.

Steve, I don't think they will look bad. I find them barely noticeable on the houses around here. I didn't realize how many people had accordian shutters until the last storm when I saw them all closed. The peace of mind will be wonderful.

Absolutely, I keep telling her that the reason she notices them now is because she is looking for them. I rode my bike thru the Meadows one day and only went on the main streets through each. I counted all the homes with them and Crestview had way more with than the others did.

Of all the accordions I have seen I think that the trainer for the Dolphins (forget his name) has the ones the blend in the most.

But like you said "the peace of mind will be wonderful", I already feel it. So long as my contractor meets the deadline.

Yes, John's match very well. I didn't look closely to see if they had them painted or if that was the color they came in.
