Our neighbors down the block had to put down their golden retriever, Bingo, this morning. He was nearly 14 years old. He basically was dying of old age as his kidneys had failed. The owner is a doctor and had taken wonderful care of the dog throughout his life with various ailments. Seven years ago Bingo had a kidney problem and the doctor (Neel, our neighbor) catheterized the dog for a couple months until he was completely cured.
I will never forget how I first met this wonderful family. We were all out here watching our houses being built 10 years ago and this couple and their two sons would sit in lawn chairs in their empty lot before it was even framed and look out at the lake. Bingo was the largest Golden Retriever I have ever seen. His head was massive. He was a gentle giant and will be missed.
I gave them a copy of my favorite poem about dogs, the Rainbow Bridge.
